Recording day

Your first podcast recording: a checklist for before, during and after

By the team at The Cast Studio · Updated · 4 min read

In short

A week before your first studio recording, finish the outline, brief your guests, confirm the set and package and prepare your logo. On the day, arrive early with water, notes and a second top, silence phones and run a short test. Afterward, download the raw files promptly and plan the edit and clips.

A first recording goes smoothly when the decisions are made before you arrive. This checklist covers the week before, the day itself and what happens after, with the specific rules and deliverables at The Cast Studio where they apply. Print it, or copy it into your notes.

What should you do a week before the recording?

A week out, lock the content, the people and the booking. Most first-session problems start here, not in the studio.

Our podcast script template has outlines for interview, solo and co-host episodes, and the podcast sets page shows all six sets with their booking links. When you brief guests, the podcast interview questions guide includes a pre-interview note you can copy, and guests can read how to be a good podcast guest.

What should you do the day before?

The day before, confirm everything and test what you can. A short list:

  • Confirm the time and address with every guest, and share where to arrive.
  • Re-read the outline once out loud, especially the intro and the call to action.
  • Try your outfit on camera, seated, and pack a second top in a different color.
  • Charge the tablet you will read notes from, and switch off its sounds.
  • Check how long the drive takes at your recording time, not at night.

What should you bring on the day?

Bring what you need to stay comfortable and what should appear on screen:

  • Your outline and notes, on paper or a silent tablet.
  • Water, and a snack for longer sessions.
  • A second top, a lint roller and matte powder or blotting paper.
  • Your logo file and any product you plan to show.
  • Guests' names and titles, spelled exactly as they should appear in the edit.

What happens at the studio on recording day?

You arrive, the team sets you up and then you record. At The Cast Studio, 801 NE 2nd Ave, Ste 120, Fort Lauderdale, this is how to make a first session go smoothly:

  1. Arrive on time, a few minutes early if you can. Full payment is due before the session starts.
  2. Setup. With Studio Essentials, an on-site tech assist handles the setup, start and stop, and basic monitoring. With the Studio Recording packages, a full crew runs the cameras, lighting and audio.
  3. Ask for a sound and framing check. Sit as you will during the episode, say a few sentences at normal volume, and check the framing if a monitor is available.
  4. Ask for a one-minute test recording, played back if the team can, to catch noise, glare or a crooked collar.
  5. Record. Leave a few seconds of silence before the intro and after the outro; editors use them.
  6. Wrap up on time. The studio must be vacated at the end of the reserved time, so leave a few minutes for photos and goodbyes.

The step-by-step version, from choosing a set to receiving files, is on the how it works page.

What should you do after the session?

Secure the files first, then edit and publish. A simple order:

  1. Download the raw files as soon as they arrive. At The Cast Studio, the Studio Recording packages deliver raw files within 24 hours and store them for 14 days; with Enhanced Edit, storage is 30 days.
  2. Back them up in a second place before anyone starts editing.
  3. Edit, or receive the finished multicam episode if you booked Studio Recording + Enhanced Edit.
  4. Cut clips from the moments you planned. Our guide to podcast clips shows a four-week posting plan.
  5. Publish and share, then send each guest the episode, a clip and their photos.

Which studio rules should you know before booking?

Frequently asked questions

How should I prepare for my first podcast recording?

Write an outline with timings, send guests the topics and a few questions, choose your set and package, test your outfit on camera and prepare your logo as an image file. Read the studio's deposit and rescheduling rules before you book, so a change of plans does not cost you the session.

What should I bring to a podcast studio?

Your outline or notes on paper or a quiet tablet, water, a second top in a different color, a lint roller, matte powder for shine, your logo file and your guests' names and titles spelled correctly. For a long session, bring a snack as well.

How early should I arrive for a podcast recording?

Plan to arrive on time, a few minutes early if you can. Studio time is reserved by the hour, and at The Cast Studio the studio must be vacated at the end of the reserved time, so a late start cannot be made up at the end.

When do I get my files after a studio session?

At The Cast Studio, raw files are delivered within 24 hours with the Studio Recording packages and stored for 14 days, or 30 days with Studio Recording + Enhanced Edit. The published Studio Essentials package does not list a delivery time, so ask when you book.

Can I reschedule a podcast studio session?

At The Cast Studio, rescheduling must be requested at least 72 hours (3 days) before the session. The deposit and all payments are non-refundable, including for cancellations, no-shows and unused studio time, so confirm your guests before you book.
